Session Summary

In critically ill patients with neurological injuries, sodium and water imbalances can be subtle yet life-threatening. This session equips critical care nurses to recognize, differentiate and manage three key neuroendocrine syndromes: diabetes insipidus (DI), syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH) and cerebral salt wasting (CSW). Content includes review of the hypothalamus, pituitary gland and the role of antidiuretic hormone (ADH) in fluid regulation. Core physiological concepts such as serum osmolality and electrolyte balance support clinical understanding. Engaging case examples reinforce practical application and demonstrate these concepts, building confidence in identifying and managing these complex patient conditions.

Objectives

  • Identify the correlative anatomy and physiology of brain injury, the hypothalamus and the pituitary.
  • Describe the role of ADH and its effect on sodium levels in the head-injured patient.
  • Compare and contrast DI, SIADH and cerebral salt wasting, their clinical symptoms and treatments.
