Session Summary

Many critical care patients have acid–base disturbances; some are more complex and go beyond the basics learned in school. This advanced–level session uses multiple case studies to first determine the primary disorder(s), and then to employ a systematic approach to interpret complex acid–base disturbances, including mixed disorders. The session also covers use of anion gap to help recognize the form of acid–base disturbance present.

Objectives

  • Identify a systematic, rapid method of interpreting primary acid-base disturbances.
  • Differentiate between limits of compensation and mixed disorders in case examples.
  • Describe use of anion gap to distinguish types of acid–base disturbances.
