Session Summary

Pediatric patients are masters of compensation – until they aren’t, making early shock recognition a challenge. This session is for those looking to grow their knowledge and skills in identifying and treating pediatric shock. Complex physiology is simplified, and an interactive activity brings oxygen delivery and shock to life. Simple visuals will allow participants to explore how children compensate, early warning signs, and how to intervene before it is too late. Come build your confidence in pediatric shock – and have fun doing so!

Objectives

  • Explain the subtle, yet critical early warning signs of pediatric shock, covering vital signs, assessment, and lab findings.
  • Describe the differences between compensated and decompensated shock and discuss necessary interventions to prevent progression.
  • Apply the oxygen delivery model to understand the physiological changes associated with the various types of pediatric shock.
