Session Summary

So, the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) wants your ECMO patient to walk, but isn’t very explicit about how to make that happen. Fortunately, at this session you can learn about a large academic medical center’s long-term initiative to mobilize awake ECMO patients, and the resulting increase in survival, decrease in posterior pressure injuries and increased disposition to home. This concurrent session reviews the new ELSO Early Rehabilitation and Mobility program guidelines and discusses what resources are necessary to develop and implement this program safely and effectively.

Objectives

  • Prepare a detailed overview of an awake ECMO program and its pivotal role in the success of implementing early mobility guidelines.
  • Discuss the link between an early mobility protocol and a decreased risk of discharge to long-term care hospitals with ECMO patients.
  • Identify key strategies to implement ELSO’s early mobility and rehabilitation guideline for ECMO patients, beginning with verticalization.
