Session Summary

Acute right ventricular failure (ARVF) is often underrecognized and misunderstood during critical illness due to its distinct differences from the left side of the heart. Without prompt recognition and intervention, it can result in a downward spiral of systemic hypoperfusion, shock, organ dysfunction and death. This interactive session equips you with the knowledge to recognize common causes, pathophysiological changes and clinical findings, to manage ARVF and stop the spiral in its tracks. Case scenarios enhance understanding and application of key concepts.

Objectives

  • Identify early clinical and hemodynamic signs of right ventricular (RV) dysfunction.
  • Explain the pathophysiologic mechanisms underlying the RV death spiral.
  • Cite case scenarios to apply evidence-based management strategies for acute right ventricular failure.
