Session Summary

Hospitalized patients often experience severe sleep and circadian disruption, impacting recovery and increasing the risk for delirium and length of stay, among other outcomes. This session highlights key recommendations for non-pharmacologic sleep promotion from the recent AACN Practice Alert, discussing evidence-based strategies for sleep promotion bundle implementation at both the bedside and through team collaboration. Case studies are presented to promote application of the key concepts. Attendees gain actionable tools to create a sustainable, sleep-friendly hospital environment to support patient recovery.

Objectives

  • Describe key recommendations from the AACN Practice Alert for Sleep Promotion in Hospitalized patients.
  • Discuss evidence-based sleep promotion interventions nurses can implement at the bedside and with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Apply strategies to integrate sleep bundles into hospital workflows to improve outcomes and create a sustainable sleep-friendly setting.
