Session Summary

This session introduces carotid flow time (FTc) as a physiologically grounded, bedside-accessible tool for assessing fluid responsiveness. Unlike pressure-based surrogates such as stroke volume, FTc offers a direct, flow-based measure that better reflects perfusion. Attendees examine how FTc compares to traditional methods and learn practical strategies for using FTc during passive leg-raise testing and early resuscitation. The session promotes curiosity, clinical confidence and a shift toward physiologically aligned hemodynamic assessments.

Objectives

  • Describe the physiologic principles underlying carotid flow time and its role in assessing fluid responsiveness.
  • Compare carotid flow time to stroke volume-based methods in terms of accuracy, applicability and pathophysiologic alignment.
  • Identify opportunities to integrate FTc into bedside workflows using point-of-care Doppler during fluid resuscitation.
