Session Summary

Regional anesthesia is a rapidly expanding treatment modality for acute pain management. Regional anesthesia provides analgesia in a targeted region and includes peripheral nerve blocks and epidural and spinal anesthesia. Regional anesthesia is associated with a reduction in opiate use and improved patient outcomes: early mobility and reduced morbidity. This session describes regional anesthesia techniques, patient selection, risk/benefits, pharmacokinetics of local anesthetics, side effect burden, potential complications and adverse drug events. Pharmacology content = 75%

  • Identify the clinical presentation of an epidural hematoma.
  • Describe the clinical presentation of local anesthetic systemic toxicity.
  • Explain the steps of lipid rescue in the treatment of local anesthetic system toxicity.
