Session Summary

As the opioid epidemic looms over American healthcare, new and creative approaches to pain control are needed now more than ever, especially in critical care settings. Interventions like sedatives, antidepressants and virtual reality can be effective tools for pain management while minimizing dependence on opioids. This presentation critically evaluates the evidence supporting these therapies, how they affect patients and how to apply them to daily practice. Frontiers in pain research such as cannabinoids and new drugs are also explored. Pharmacology content = 65%

Objectives

  • Evaluate literature focusing on novel pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic interventions for acute pain control.
  • Identify doses and administration techniques effective in practically implementing these interventions in critical care areas.
  • Apply these interventions in case studies of hypothetical critical care patients.
