Session Summary

Traumatic cardiac arrest (TCA), a life-threatening condition with low survival rates, requires a fundamentally different approach compared to medical cardiac arrest. Rapid identification and focused management of the major reversible causes optimize chances of survival. During this session, emphasis is on the xABC approach, prioritizing exsanguination control (x), followed by airway, breathing and circulation. Key controversies are discussed, including debates over chest compressions, use of epinephrine, fluid resuscitation strategies and the expanding role of resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA).

Objectives

  • Identify common reversible causes of traumatic cardiac arrest.
  • Explain the xABC approach, where hemorrhage control proceeds airway, breathing and circulation.
  • Discuss current controversies surrounding the use of chest compression, epinephrine, and fluid resuscitation strategies.
