Session Summary

Nurses have tremendous expertise and talent that should not be underestimated. However, research suggests nurses’ involvement in general health policy is limited. Across practice settings, nurses can impact broader changes to advance issues in policy at the micro and macro level. This session reviews the steps in the policy-making process and provides a systematic strategy to assess advocacy competencies that advance nursing’s agendas, improve health and fulfill the profession’s contract with society. It’s up to you to answer the call to action.

Objectives

  • Explore strategies to improve nurses' involvement in healthcare policy-making.
  • Discuss the competencies needed to be an advocate in different healthcare settings.
  • Identify barriers that can impact the success or failure of advocacy.
