Session Summary

An estimated 900,000 to 1.2 million percutaneous coronary interventions are performed annually in the United States. The radial and femoral arteries are the primary access sites for various percutaneous cardiac interventions. Utilizing large-bore introducer sheaths increases the risk of arterial access-site complications. This intermediate session reviews access-site complications, including arteriovenous fistula, pseudoaneurysm, arterial dissection, acute limb ischemia, bleeding and retroperitoneal hematoma, including current treatments for each complication.

Objectives

  • Explain why operative repair is indicated of arteriovenous fistulas in high-output cardiac failure.
  • Describe one surgical and one nonsurgical treatment for arterial access-site complications.
  • Identify one of the six Ps signifying an acutely ischemic limb.
