Session Summary

In this session, attendees learn the importance of prioritizing extubating the postsurgical cardiovascular patient as soon as it is safe and appropriate to do so. Research shows extubation within the 6-hour postoperative timeframe improves patient outcomes and results in less time spent in the ICU. This protocol, education and implementation is available for adoption in all surgical ICUs to improve patient outcomes and patient satisfaction.

  • Identify key components used to develop and implement nurse-driven extubation protocols.
  • Define outcomes and challenges with implementing nurse-driven extubation protocols.
