Hands-On Ultrasound-Guided Venous Access Training

Session Summary

This hands-on simulation training workshop includes ultrasound assessment, needling techniques with use of ultrasound and venous peripheral device insertion. Attendees rotate through hands-on stations to gain awareness of procedural confidence. Stations include leading the needle, rapid peripheral vein assessment (RaPEVA) assessment and extended-dwell peripheral IV (EDPIV) insertion.

Objectives

  • Use ultrasound scanning to identify anatomical structures, verify vessel health and identify appropriate insertion sites.
  • Demonstrate the use of ultrasound for peripheral venous catheter insertion.
  • Practice aseptic technique including hand hygiene, gowning, gloving, establishing a sterile field, draping, proper dressing and securement.
