Session Summary

This case-based session explores ICU scenarios where nurse concerns may have been dismissed due to bias, communication gaps or system barriers. Using the ICU Time Machine and visual storytelling, participants revisit each case to examine and how outcomes could improve. Nurses reflect on trusting their instincts, speaking up and acting with clarity and purpose—not by chance, but on purpose.

Objectives

  • Describe how nurse intuition contributes to the early recognition of patient deterioration in the ICU.
  • Identify cognitive biases and system-level barriers which contribute to the dismissal or delay of nursing concerns.
  • Apply strategies to advocate effectively and escalate care when clinical observations suggest early decline.
