Session Summary

This session provides a foundational understanding of mechanical ventilation (MV), including key ventilator modes—volume control, pressure control and hybrid settings—and the clinical rationale behind their use. Participants explore essential nursing interventions for managing life-threatening alarms and complications such as low volume, high volume, pressure changes and apnea. By strengthening MV knowledge, nurses can enhance patient safety, improve outcomes and approach ventilator management with greater confidence.

Objectives

  • Describe the different modes of mechanical ventilation and anticipate the appropriate mode for critically ill patients.
  • Identify and troubleshoot common ventilator alarms to ensure patient safety and effective ventilation.
  • Assess patients for readiness to be weaned off mechanical ventilation and implement appropriate liberation strategies.
