Session Summary

Cardiac intensive care nurses play a crucial role in the early identification of patients with cardiogenic shock. They apply their knowledge of pathophysiology, pharmacology and the management of temporary circulatory support to treat patients experiencing cardiogenic shock. Recognizing refractory cardiogenic shock triggers the multidisciplinary shock team to escalate care to temporary circulatory support, bridging to recovery, heart transplant or palliative care.

Objectives

  • Describe the pathophysiology and clinical presentation of cardiogenic shock.
  • Identify the first-line pharmacologic therapies used in the management of cardiogenic shock and their mechanism of action.
  • Compare the indications, functions and nursing considerations for mechanical circulatory support devices.
