Session Summary

Understanding hemodynamics and complications in a cardiac surgery patient helps guide the next steps in clinical management. This session focuses on optimizing cardiac output as determined by preload, afterload, contractility and heart rate in relation to cardiac pharmacology. The so-called diamond of disaster complications of acidosis, hypothermia, coagulopathy and hypocalcemia are highlighted. Priority assessments/interventions in the first 48 hours post-op are discussed. This is a helpful session for those planning to take the CSC examination. Pharmacology content = 75%

Objectives

  • Relate hemodynamic concepts of preload, afterload and contractility to pharmacological treatments in cardiac surgery patients.
  • Identify and manage early complications unique to cardiac surgery, including assessment cues and priority interventions.
  • Apply clinical reasoning through case-based scenarios to guide evidence-based treatment strategies.
Topics Cardiovascular, Hemodynamics
Population Adult
Role APRN, Staff
