Session Summary

It is imperative for nurses to have tools to navigate ethical challenges inherent in the growing number of ECMO programs. We provide a brief overview of ethical controversies related to ECMO therapy, including patient selection, quality of life and withdrawal of this life-sustaining therapy. We present two case studies, describe ethical challenges and use interactive polling to provide ethical recommendations. Attendees participate by answering polling questions based on an established ethical framework.

Objectives

  • Summarize recent literature on ethical considerations regarding the provision of ECMO therapy.
  • Analyze case scenarios and provide ethically supportable recommendations for nurses who care for patients on ECMO therapy.
  • Describe an ethical framework nurses can use to guide ethical considerations and analysis during challenging situations (eg, end of life).
