Session Summary

Adults born with congenital heart defects (CHD) account for approximately 2/3 of the CHD population, with over 2 million patients living in the United States. Management of various defects is challenging due to the complexity of patient anatomy and functional status. This presentation reviews three of the most common CHD lesions and provides guidance and evidence-based strategies to provide exemplary patient- and family-centered care, with an emphasis on adults with CHD.

Objectives

  • Describe three of the most common congenital heart defects and initial symptoms and management.
  • Explain long-term pathophysiologic changes that occur in CHD patients as they reach adulthood.
  • Discuss care-transition issues and opportunities as patients reach adulthood.
