Session Summary

Despite safety efforts, central line-associated bloodstream infections and hospital-acquired pressure injuries continue to pose serious risks in ICU settings. This session examines how a critical care team applied the Systems Engineering Initiative for Patient Safety (SEIPS) model to redesign care processes and enhance patient outcomes. Nurse leaders, bedside staff and interdisciplinary partners collaborated to identify human factors, optimize workflows and implement sustainable improvements using root cause analysis and actions. Attendees learn practical, team-based strategies to lead system redesign for safer, high-quality critical care.

Objectives

  • Explain the elements of human factors and ergonomics and their application to healthcare and nursing, focusing on patient safety.
  • Discuss the impact of performance-influencing and performance-shaping factors in achieving patient care and organizational outcomes.
  • Formulate actions to improve patient safety and quality of care applying the SEIPS model.
