Session Summary

This session prepares new graduate nurses to navigate the emotional and communication challenges of patient death in the ICU by integrating structured coping strategies into high-fidelity mock code drills. Using an unfolding, ICU-based scenario, we discuss commutation techniques to deliver bad news, explore tools such as guided pauses that support compassionate communication following unsuccessful resuscitation and discuss the role of grief support among critical care nurses.

Objectives

  • Examine personal and professional responses to patient death following a mock resuscitation scenario.
  • Evaluate effective communication techniques for delivering death notifications to family members during a simulated post code discussion.
  • Describe the use of structured debriefing to process the impact of an unsuccessful resuscitation.
