Session Summary

This session explores the traumatic nature of an intensive care unit (ICU) stay and its impact on mental health, focusing on medical trauma, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and postintensive care syndrome (PICS). We explain trauma-informed care (TIC) principles and offer strategies to integrate them into ICU and outpatient recovery programs, aiming to reduce the burden of PICS and support posttraumatic growth. Case studies illustrate these concepts.
