Session Summary

Use of mechanical cardiac support (MCS) is now commonplace, but studies show even experienced ICU teams need guidance when these patients arrest, as nearly half experience resuscitation delays beyond 2 minutes, with poor survival. Unique challenges for providers include accurately identifying arrest in patients who are pulseless and determining the appropriate device-specific algorithm. The lack of a universal approach is costing lives. MCS subject matter experts are credited with identifying this need and developing a standardized, evidence-based management approach.

Objectives

  • Compare and contrast current recommendations for assessing and managing arrest in patients with varied MCS devices.
  • Identify reliable indicators of arrest and clarify appropriate initial actions to reduce response delays and improve patient outcomes.
  • Discuss new recommendations for a universal MCS arrest management protocol based on best-evidence.
