Move with Purpose: The ICU Nurse’s Role in Early and Progressive Mobility

Facilitator(s): Sarah Vance, MSN, RN, CCRN-CMC

Supported by: HoverTech an Etac Company

Session Summary

Early and progressive mobility is a critical ICU intervention. Prolonged immobility contributes to ICU-acquired weakness, delirium, increased ventilator days, and longer hospital stays. Bedside nurses play a vital role in assessing readiness, initiating safe mobility, and advocating for movement despite barriers. This session reviews nurse-driven mobility strategies and addresses common implementation challenges.

Objectives

  • Identify the risks of immobility and the benefits of early and progressive mobility in critically ill patients.
