Session Summary

This session strengthens pediatric ICU nurses’ ability to recognize, respond to, and prevent serious harm from peripheral IV infiltration and extravasations (PIVIEs) through early detection and evidence-based care. The differences between infiltration and extravasation, risk factors, prevention strategies, high-quality IV assessment, early warning signs, and immediate nursing actions will be covered, emphasizing that early recognition and treatment saves tissue.

Objectives

  • Recognize early signs of infiltration and extravasation via consistent, high-quality IV assessments.
  • Initiate immediate and appropriate interventions for an IV infiltrate/extravasation to prevent serious harm from occurring.
