Session Summary

Adult sepsis screening tools perform poorly in obstetric patients. These patients are not cared for exclusively in obstetric units, so nurses and APRNs must have knowledge of obstetric sepsis: how to identify it early and treat rapidly. Obstetric sepsis definition and an evidence-based screening tool is analyzed. Research-based treatment guidelines are detailed, as are practical strategies to implement a facility-wide obstetric sepsis screening and treatment protocol.

Objectives

  • Examine evidence-based treatment for obstetric sepsis and identify steps to create an obstetric sepsis standard protocol in your facility.
  • Apply the CMQCC two-step obstetric sepsis screening tool to a case using case review format.
