Session Summary

This advanced session examines evidence-based pharmacologic strategies for critically ill patients with severe trauma and status epilepticus. Content includes first- and second-line antiseizure therapies, emerging roles for lacosamide and ketamine and ICU-relevant trauma pharmacology such as hyperosmolar therapy, post-injury endocrine dysfunction and calcium derangements. Emphasis is placed on medication selection, physiologic impact and outcomes in high-acuity critical care settings. Pharmacology content = 100%

  • Describe the epidemiology and pathophysiology of hypocalcemia in trauma.
  • Discuss specific deficiencies in organ donor transplant statistics in North America.
  • Review pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties of first- and second-line medications for the treatment of status epilepticus.
