Session Summary

The session provides an exploration of East-West Syndrome, a lesser known but clinically significant complication associated with venoarterial extracorporeal membrane wxygenation (VA-ECMO). East-West Syndrome is presented though a structured concept analysis framework identifying defining attributes, antecedents, consequences and clinical indicators. The session also highlights the importance of critical care nursing in using practical strategies to prevent complications and improve safety and patient outcomes when providing VA-ECMO.

Objectives

  • Define East-West Syndrome and differentiate if from North-South Syndrome as it relates to ECMO.
  • Identify the key clinical indicators and anatomical factors that contribute to lateral perfusion mismatch in patient in VA-ECMO.
  • Describe critical nursing interventions for early detection, monitoring and strategies to prevent complications of East-West Syndrome.
