Session Summary

High-quality CPR is the foundation of survival in pediatric cardiac arrest and is crucial to the success of extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR). Yet, maintaining high-quality compressions with minimal pauses during ECPR cannulation is challenging. This session explores the continuum of care—from initial compressions to extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) flow—emphasizing the importance of CPR quality, impact of no-flow time and strategies to reduce interruptions. Practical techniques are shared to guide teams in optimizing perfusion during high-stakes resuscitation.

Objectives

  • Define ECPR and review current literature on its use in pediatric cardiac arrest.
  • Identify components of high-quality CPR and discuss techniques to improve resuscitation quality prior to ECPR cannulation.
  • Explore the impact of pauses on outcomes and discuss techniques to minimize no-flow time during ECPR cannulation.
