Session Summary

Admitting patients to ICU with co-existing opioid and/or alcohol substance use disorders is becoming much more common. However, few tools exist to guide teams and patients on their not-so-straightforward journey. This session explores management of substance use disorders in adult ICU, focusing on acute opioid and alcohol poisoning and withdrawal. Resuscitation priorities, and complexities associated with managing pain, sedation, spontaneous awakening trials, patient behavior and staff safety are highlighted. Case studies help ICU nurses improve knowledge about this vulnerable population.

Objectives

  • Explain how severe ingestion of opioids and/or alcohol contributes to the complexity in managing critical illness or injury.
  • Identify best-practice approaches for managing and preventing complications in ICU patients with coexisting substance use disorders.
  • Describe the ICU nurse’s role in advocating for harm reduction and decreasing the stigma associated with substance use disorders.
