Session Summary

This interactive session aims to empower attendees to identify and manage clinical complexities of critically ill patients with substance use disorder (SUD). Case studies exemplify methods to reduce stigma surrounding SUD for both patients and nursing professionals, while exploring strategies to maintain patient safety and uphold professional standards. This session increases participants’ ability to provide compassionate, safe and effective care in the complex landscape of critical care and SUD.

  • Describe the unique clinical challenges and care complexities presented by critically ill patients with substance use disorder.
  • Summarize strategies and resources to reduce stigma and support both patients and nursing professionals facing substance use challenges.
  • Identify risk factors, indicators and the professional impact associated with substance use disorder among critical care colleagues.
