Session Summary

This progressive care session explores the physiologic signs, concepts and diagnostics used to rapidly identify a decompensating pulmonary patient, and best practices for resuscitation. Disease pathology and medical/nursing interventions are discussed, including a review of oxygen delivery, noninvasive positive pressure ventilation, airway stabilization techniques and fundamental ventilator modes. Using case scenarios, an overview of common ventilator alarms is discussed, including troubleshooting common alarms (eg, high airway pressure alarm, low tidal volume alarm, acute desaturation, vent dyssynchrony).

Objectives

  • Discuss pulmonary pathophysiology, examining expected and common acute or chronic abnormalities and complications in PCU patients.
  • Evaluate medical and nursing interventions for PCU patients experiencing pulmonary complications.
  • Apply best practices used in case scenarios to treat those with acute or chronic respiratory insufficiency.
