Activity Summary

Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

This research study sought to compare the effects of natural sound therapy and a clinical pathway for endotracheal suctioning pain management with usual suctioning of critically ill Chinese adult patients. The results of this study provide additional evidence that natural sound therapy, as part of a holistic bundle of interventions including pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic therapies, reduces pain and agitation during endotracheal suctioning among surgical ICU patients receiving mechanical ventilation.

Objectives

  • Describe the effect of natural sound therapy on pain intensity score in critically ill Chinese adults receiving endotracheal suctioning.
  • Identify the effect of natural sound therapy on agitation score in critically ill Chinese adults receiving endotracheal suctioning.
  • Evaluate the effects of a clinical pathway for endotracheal tube suctioning on pain intensity and agitation scores in a critical care unit.
