Activity Summary

Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

The Get to Know Me board is a Patient and Family Centered Care intervention. Patients or their family members and friends enter the patient’s likes, values, and preferences on a Get to Know Me board displayed on the wall so that health care professionals can incorporate these preferences into the patient’s care. A pilot study showed that clinicians caring for adult patients found it easier to connect when using the Get to Know Me board and believed that the board strengthened their therapeutic relationship. Results of 2 additional studies indicated that Get to Know Me boards enhanced nurses’ perceptions of their caring behaviors, made patients “feel human,” and improved patient satisfaction. This mixed-methods study examined the effect of a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU)–specific Get to Know Me board on perceptions of empathy, trust, and satisfaction among nurses and families. Objective #1: Define the core components of patient- and family-centered (PFCC).

Objectives

  • Define the core components of patient- and family-centered (PFCC).
  • List nursing care actions that display patient- and family-centered care to family members in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
  • Describe the impact of the NICU Get to Know Me board on nurses and family members compared to standard PFCC interventions.
