Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes
Healthcare professionals, especially ICU nurses, are vulnerable to being affected by adverse events both professionally and emotionally. This vulnerability is often described as the second victim phenomenon, in which clinicians experience significant psychological distress after such events. A study conducted in four Latin American countries, involving 762 ICU nurses, found that the psychological dimension was most affected, with sadness being the most frequently reported emotion. Lower peer support was linked to greater distress and higher absenteeism, while Chile reported the strongest perception of institutional support. These findings underscore the importance of implementing structured organizational programs to mitigate negative outcomes.Learners must complete the entire activity and the associated evaluation AND read Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes.
