Activity Summary

Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

Engaging patients, family members, and caregivers in patient-centered outcomes research and comparative effectiveness research during and after a critical illness is essential to ensure that research questions that matter are being asked and outcomes that matter are being measured.1 Engaging clinicians is also crucial to ensure a real world perspective that considers the unique features and context of critical care settings. Four sessions of group concept mapping, participatory research and engagement approach, were used with 16 former patients and their family members/ caregivers and 23 professionals (clinicians and researchers) to elicit barriers to ICU research participation. Strategies to address the barriers were outlined and categorized according to themes identified in the literature, with input from a patient and family advisory board.

Objectives

  • Describe barriers to conducting research during and after critical illness hospitalization
  • Identify strategies for overcoming barriers to conducting research during and after critical illness hospitalization
  • Explain the key role of ICU clinicians in supporting patient centered outcomes research
