Activity Summary

Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

Small‑bore feeding tubes are widely used in critically ill adults to deliver nutrition and medications, yet maintaining proper distal placement is essential to reduce aspiration risk and ensure nutrient absorption. Although current guidelines recommend verifying tube location every 4 hours, no validated bedside method exists to support such frequent assessment. This study examined distal migration of small‑bore feeding tubes over time and explored factors contributing to retrograde movement, including the potential influence of endotracheal tube extubation.

Objectives

  • Describe the clinical significance of small-bore feeding tube migration in critically ill adults.
  • Identify factors associated with retrograde feeding tube migration, with emphasis on modifiable risks
  • Evaluate current practice standards for routine feeding tube verification and apply evidence-based recommendations to bedside practice.
