Activity Summary

Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

This prospective cohort study examined the incidence and contributing factors of nasogastric tube–related pressure injuries in intensive care unit (ICU) and internal medicine ward patients. Adults admitted with a nasogastric tube placed during or shortly before admission were followed daily, excluding those with preexisting facial injuries. From July 2022 to July 2024, 136 patients were enrolled in a 900-bed medical center (88 ICU, 48 internal medicine). Contrary to expectations, incidence was significantly lower in the ICU (0.47 per 100 patient-days) than in the internal medicine ward (3.02 per 100 patient-days). Internal medicine patients had a higher comorbidity burden and differed in nasogastric tube fixation methods. These findings suggest that comorbidities, staffing ratios, and fixation techniques may influence pressure injury risk and deserve further study.

Objectives

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the current data and research on nasogastric tube–related pressure injuries
  • Describe the findings of the current research (incidence of the pressure injuries)
  • Describe contributing factors to the nasogastric tube–related pressure injuries development
