Description
Obesity can significantly affect the absorption, distribution, metabolism, and elimination of medications, creating challenges for safe and effective drug therapy. Physiologic changes associated with excess body weight may alter medication response, making standard dosing strategies less reliable. Careful selection of dosing weight, consideration of drug-specific characteristics, and therapeutic drug monitoring are often necessary to optimize treatment outcomes while minimizing the risk of toxicity or treatment failure in patients with obesity.Objectives
- Identify pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic alterations in patients with obesity that influence medication dosing and therapeutic response.
- Evaluate weight-based dosing impact on efficacy and safety and select appropriate body weight metric based on drug pharmacokinetics.
- Recognize appropriate monitoring parameters and the timing of therapeutic drug monitoring to evaluate medication efficacy and safety.
