Description
Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is an important therapy in the postoperative management of lung transplant recipients who are at risk for primary graft dysfunction and other forms of early allograft injury. Patients with significant pulmonary arterial hypertension and other high-risk characteristics may benefit from prophylactic ECMO to facilitate controlled reperfusion, support cardiopulmonary function, and improve graft recovery. This article reviews current evidence regarding indications for postoperative ECMO, selection of venovenous (VV) versus venoarterial (VA) support, and cannulation strategies based on individual cardiopulmonary physiology. Common challenges are explored along with evidence-based approaches for prevention, early recognition, and management. Special emphasis is placed on the critical care nurse’s role in ECMO monitoring, multidisciplinary coordination, complication surveillance, and best practices for patient outcomes following lung transplantation.Learners must complete the entire activity and the associated evaluation AND read Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes.
