Acute and critical care nurses require specific knowledge and practice drills to effectively respond to an MSI. Specific areas of knowledge include bleeding control, recognition of life-threatening injuries, triage, evidence collection, ballistics, and risk factors for violence. The top 4 recommendations for acute and critical care nurses are as follows: all nurses should be trained on Stop the Bleed techniques; all nurses should receive education on MSI prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery; nurses should participate in active shooter drills incorporating the run-hide-fight concept; and every code cart and automated external defibrillator should have a Stop the Bleed kit.
