Activity Summary

This article demonstrates how algorithms and protocols help guide the assessment and treatment of patients with cardiogenic shock. One approach is to use a shock team with protocols to facilitate and direct multidisciplinary team interactions. Deploying a multidisciplinary shock team following protocols improves clinical outcomes by providing timely diagnosis and reducing deviations from standard practice. Providing a systematic approach to activate the shock team is an evidence-based practice that improves teamwork coordination and clinical outcomes.

Objectives

  • Identify at least one factor contributing to cardiogenic shock mortality.
  • Describe the two nursing intervention strategies used to improve cardiogenic shock team activation.
  • Describe how shock team activation impacts the time of diagnosis of cardiogenic shock.
