Activity Summary

Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

The well-being and satisfaction of the patient and the patient’s family members have a profound impact on overall care delivery, treatment outcomes, and the patient’s recovery process. Patient and family satisfaction is an essential metric for evaluating the perception of care delivery and quality of health care services. The Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems survey is used nationally to evaluate inpatient satisfaction. However, differentiating metrics for care provided in the ICU from care provided in stepdown/intermediate units is challenging. Measuring patient and family satisfaction can provide valuable insights into areas for improvement and for strategies to enhance the overall experience of patients and their families in the ICU. Strategies that engage family members in rounds improve communication and satisfaction.

Objectives

  • Identify tools to evaluate patient and family satisfaction in the intensive care unit.
  • Describe barriers to patient and family satisfaction in the intensive care unit.
  • Outline interventions to impact patient and family satisfaction in the intensive care unit.
