Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes
Sleep deprivation is common among intensive care unit (ICU) patients, but it is a harmful condition that can lead to a prolonged ICU stay and may even increase patient risk of death. Sleep deprivation can cause emotional distress and has been theorized to have negative effects on the respiratory, cardiovascular, immunologic, metabolic, muscular, and neurocognitive systems. With sleep deprivation becoming a more common complaint and source of distress among critically ill patients, in 2018 the Society of Critical Care Medicine expanded its national clinical practice guidelines for the management of pain, agitation, and delirium (PAD) to include immobility and sleep disruption (PADIS). This study reviews an interprofessional effort to minimize patient interruptions at night in an intensive care unit setting which led to improved patient sleep quality and sustainable practice changes.Learners must complete the entire activity and the associated evaluation to be awarded contact hours AND read Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes. No partial credit will be awarded.
