Description

Once considered a disease of the past in the United States, measles has re-emerged as a growing public health concern. Increasing case numbers, declining vaccination rates, and large outbreaks have renewed the need for healthcare professionals to recognize and manage this highly contagious infection. This article examines the resurgence of measles and its implications for acute and critical care practice, including epidemiology, pathophysiology, early identification, infection prevention, complications, and management.

Objectives

  • Outline the epidemiology, pathophysiology, presenting signs and symptoms, and laboratory findings in patients with measles.
  • Identify the nursing considerations when caring for a patient with measles in a hospital setting.
  • Describe complications that occur due to measles infection.
