Activity Summary

Before you Begin

1. Reflect on the following question: What new knowledge or perspective do you hope to gain from this activity?

2. Review: Implicit Bias and its Impact on Patient Outcomes (License requirement for California)

Description

Early integration of pediatric palliative care (PPC) in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) can improve quality of life, reduce suffering, and support complex decision-making for critically ill children and their families. PPC addresses physical, psychological, social, and spiritual needs while helping families establish goals of care and participate in advance care planning. This article describes the implementation of a trigger-based criteria process designed to identify PICU patients most likely to benefit from PPC consultation. By promoting timely referrals, the initiative aimed to ensure consistent access to palliative care services, support informed decision-making, and enhance patient- and family-centered care throughout the disease trajectory.

Objectives

  • Describe the benefits of integrating palliative care early in the disease course.
  • Identify strategies for implementing a trigger criteria process for early integration of palliative care in the pediatric ICU.
  • Evaluate the process used to assess the effectiveness of the quality improvement initiative.
