Activity Summary

Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

Quantitative pupillometry is emerging as a rapid, objective method for assessing neurologic function, even in high‑acuity situations. This activity explores a case in which nurses obtained pupillometry readings during cardiac arrest, offering a unique look at the feasibility of collecting these data during resuscitation. Learners will examine how pupillometry can provide insight into cerebral perfusion and potential recovery, as well as practical challenges such as timing assessments and navigating crowded resuscitation environments. This case highlights how a portable, noninvasive tool may expand neurologic monitoring during arrest while raising important questions about its role in clinical decision‑making.

Objectives

  • Discuss the value of identifying a biomarker of cerebral perfusion during cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
  • Identify the advantages of using quantitative pupillometry to evaluate neurological status in a patient with acquired brain injury.
  • List the steps necessary to measure the pupillary light reflex during cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
