Activity Summary

Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

Mechanical ventilation places critically ill patients at increased risk for ventilator-associated events (VAEs), highlighting the need for effective prevention strategies. A medical critical care unit experiencing rising ventilator days and inconsistent use of the ICU Liberation Bundle implemented a nurse-led quality improvement initiative through shared governance. Guided by a clinical nurse specialist and the nursing unit council, the project focused on improving spontaneous awakening and breathing trials through education, data literacy, compliance monitoring, and root cause analysis. Although reductions in VAEs and changes in bundle compliance were not statistically significant, further initiatives should focus on sustaining a comprehensive approach to reducing ventilator-associated events.

Objectives

  • Describe the impact of ventilator-associated events (VAEs) and ventilator days on patient outcomes.
  • Identify evidence-based strategies for reducing VAEs.
  • Evaluate outcome and process measures used to assess the effectiveness of the quality improvement initiative.
