Acute kidney injury (AKI) may occur in more than 50% of patients in critical care and results in higher mortality. AKI and chronic kidney disease leads to acid base abnormalities, electrolyte imbalances and drug toxicities. Diagnostic parameters, renal protective strategies, treatments, nephrotoxic agents and complications are included.

Objectives

  • Describe the physiologic impact of abnormal renal function.
  • Define the most common causes of acute kidney injury in the hospitalized patient.
  • Discuss priority nursing care considerations for patients with acute kidney injury or chronic kidney disease.
